This album is the result of countless days and nights creating through the extremes of 2020: isolation and collective action, grief and joy, despair and radical optimism, solitude and collaboration. During the lockdown I devoted myself to my studio, making music daily, creating first with Lollise in our apartment in Queens, then with Noah (remotely) in Brooklyn and finally reconnecting with Delasi in Ghana, sending sound fragments across the Atlantic with feverish intensity. Music kept me motivated, focused and hopeful, even as ambulances screamed outside the window and the reality began to penetrate our isolation, that, once again, the police were murdering Black people and once again it seemed that there would be no justice. And suddenly we exploded into the hot NYC streets, screaming, drumming, crying, marching, demanding an end to the racist, capitalist system, demanding justice for stolen lives, for stolen land. We also experienced a taste of the collaboration that is needed to undo this system, the mutual aid, the community action, the spontaneous celebrations of our humanity.
“We were supporting each other, strangers were supporting each other. We were making music with anything…We saw so many things! We went from protest to the beach, to home, to the protest, to the beach…It was the best summer.” Lollise says. “We saw the city! We had parties in the street, impromptu, in the rain; the rain didn’t bother us anymore.
That summer cannot be replicated ever. We don’t want any more killings of Black people, we don’t want another pandemic, but we want to create. Those moments of joy continue going forward, and togetherness and camaraderie and support. It was the best summer ever and it’s reverberating in a lot of ways, too.”
This music is just a small part of that reverberation, a part of the story of how we, collectively, lived and died in 2020. My solitary musical explorations and ongoing collaborations with Lollise, Noah and Delasi fed me and kept me going this year. There is so much more to do, so much to share going forward.
